Got in the car today and the floor mat was wet.

Wet spot looked to be just under the drivers side wiper pivot.


Looked up under dash, and it was dry. Even ran my fingers along where I thought a drip could come from and it was dry.


Only had about .05 inches of rain.


Car has been outside with multiple inches of rain lots of times with out any leaks.


The only difference today was the car was parked on the street and not the driveway. In the driveway, the car sits level.

On the street there is a slight slope (passenger side slightly lower).


Other than the wiper pivot (which looked dry) where else should I look for leak?

check the drivers air box that's fed by the cowl area.....see if the bottom of it is wet....worth a check...
I am fighting with a mystery leak on the passenger side of my '74 Duster....good luck!

I hate to say it, but check for rust out around the top lip of the fresh air vent on the driver's side. Open up the vent and check for water on the bottom. Stick your hand up in there and feel the integrity of the lip at the top of the tube. Often times debris builds up in the cowl which traps water which leads to rust out around the base of that lip.

Car is moved to driveway, and more rain on the way.


If there's no more water, the slight angle on the street has something to do with it.


I was parked where my truck is (behind the Valiant) in my sig picture, so that's how much the road slope is........

I used to chase water leaks when I worked at a Honda dealer. The best way I found was to take a watering wand for plants and mount it on a ladder so it wont move. then crawl in the car with it "raining" on the spot you think is leaking. Make the area small and the water slow so you can make sure the water dosent travel all over the car.

so i'm guessing that your pivot seals are good? they are available, and not expensive.

The pinch welds leaked below the windshield on my 69 dart.

The cowl plenum has 2 water holes at the corners that drip water in the space between the fender and the front kick panels.

The water is supposed to drip straight down and out another hole at the bottom of the fender.

When I first got the car, water would drip onto the insulation on the backside of the kick panel and get the floor wet.

I fixed that problem by glueing some plastic sheeting to the triangular opening behind the kickpanel.


I think when I'm parked on the street there's enough of an angle that water finds another path (rather than down) somewhere above the kickpanel......

Wow. Water leaks onto the front carpets is a Dart/Valient can of worms! Our family has a history of 9 owned 1974-1976 Darts/ Valients/Sports, and they ALL leaked. Comments so far have hit on just a few possibilities. I am currently developing a new method of accessing & sealing those under-cowl (dead space) leaks that come through the rusted body joints into the carpets. I don't think there is any one thread here that comes to a 100% solution to the problem, but I know there have been many past discussions on the water leak issues. (/6 Dan- any input??)

"Louise", a 1976 Dart Custom project, (now sadly reverted to being just an "organ donor" to our other project Darts.)

I taped covered the slots on the cowl with metal tape and painted it.
Then i added a short vinal hose on the washer nozzles to extend past
the tape.

For temporary sealing of the wiper rubber bushings, I wrapped the
shaft of the wiper arm , 5 turns of clear plastic and tied it in knot.
I keep extra plastic bags for when the sun's UV breaks up the plastic.
The bag is the kind for produce at the grocery store.

My '84 Ram does the same thing when it is parked in the street. I finally determined that it is the door gasket at the bottom. It is caused by cars passing by splashing water at the door. My street holds water in the center in front of my house. If I park in the driveway, no leak.
