Post subject:  Ram "Mini" Starter Installed

So we've had one of the "mini" Ram Hemi Starters sitting around the shop since folks started figuring out what they fit on and we test fit it on a few of our shop cars. Seems that it's a direct bolt in for the slant after drilling out the threaded hole to 9/16. And WOW what a starter it is! Previously the car had a standard "coffee can" type and took a couple revolutions to get up to speed, and then the car would light. On cooler mornings, I would have to roll the engine over 5 times, let the starter "spin down" then she would fire after 3-5 cranks on the second go. Just got used to it after 7 years. Not this little bad boy. On cold start, between 1-2 revolutions, she fires, and yesterday running errands, she would fire at the flick of the key. This car sees daily driving, so if it goes in the $#!+ I'll post about it, however I HIGHLY encourage this "upgrade" for now. Still kinda need to get used to the sound of it, definitely doesn't sound like a Mopar starter.
Slant on folks!

Yep, have one on my 68 Dart with 200-4R swap. Sounds a bit too GM for me, but works great and only 7 lbs.

Ditto. Wound up with one on my HAMBster, and love it.
Will be putting one on the animation slant in our float next, then another one'll go on the shelf to wait its turn into El Toad.

Now if the contact discs in the solenoids'll just last ...... 8)

So this is an upgrade I am interested in doing. The /6 starters have always been junk in my opinion. Can you tell me more about this starter? What did it come off of and is this something that can be found at a salvage yard? I was under the impression a starter from the Dodge Caravan 3.0 would also work on our slants. I have an 87 D150
Thanks

I don't know about the Caravan starter, but the 3.9 Dakota starter cranks my truck with barely a flick of the key.

Nope, they're not junk. They work fine for years and decades -- until they're "remanufactured". See this thread.

See this thread and this one and this one. This is the newest-design starter that will fit; for another readily-available choice see here.

No, it will not fit -- not even a little bit.
