hi uncle d and other sages- uncle moe once told me he learned during the war that one of the best ways to survive or avoid going to the cleaners in clip city is to anticipate, pre-think and have an alternative plan b ready when plan a fails. heres the issue- where to find replacement am fm cassette radios. my cars have always had one. use them constantly to play my many cassette tapes when rolling down tobacco road to hell flats. need to have an alternative source in line. crutchfield was always the best for years but they no longer have this item(pioneer). no success scouring the internet for sources either. sony x plod was the best for durability. current one is 10 years old. sony no longer has anything like this either. have a contact which can repair them. he has repaired the sony once. seems the common failure is an internal platform which shifts the cassette tape into different modes, called the tape clutch. shyster told me to replace system with a cd platform and have all my cassettes converted to cds at a phat cost of course. any sources uncle d or other radio mechanics? thanks tons bob f

There are loads of cassette decks on eBay, even NOS ones. Be ready to replace an old belt, though.

It might be a losing battle to keep using cassette tapes. Besides the difficulty in finding twin-shaft am/fm/cassette players, the cassettes themselves have a shelf life.

In earlier topics, SSDan often recommends Tayman Electrical for upgrading am radios. I don't have any experience with Tayman but Dan's recommended upgrade is modifying the old radio to use the Aurora FMC-1 upgrade. I had a local shop do this for my old radio (which also needed new capacitors) this year and it works great. The FMC-1 also has the ability to add an auxiliary input to the radio so you can play music from any device. The shop added a couple of RCA jacks and I bought a male RCA to male 3.5mm audio cable so I can plug in my phone.
AM Radio Upgrade

Having music in a digital format for your MP3 player I find is way better than having cassette tapes. I use Music Bee to manage my library (I have an android phone) and iTunes with an Apple device. You can economically rebuild your music library from:

• converting cassette tapes to MP3
• ripping CDs
• downloading music via Freegal (through your public library)
• converting youtube videos to mp3
