Looking at buying a parts truck. This particular 150 is slant-powered, but he claims it has a 3spd+od manual transmission. Did the D150 come with an 833 in 85?

The D-150 was supposed to be the heavy duty package compared to the D-100, but I had heard that the D150 had become the base package about the mid-80's and all the other versions (250,350) were similar to replace the 200 and 300 models out right.

All the slant D-150's I've encountered to date have been equipped with the 11" clutch/ low mount bellhousing and NP-435 transmission.

my 83 D150 has a slant with an a833 OD ,, 10 clutch

I have seen several other 80's D series trucks over time in the pull a parts with the a833 OD tranny
believe I only ever saw one with a NP435 tranny and that was v8 D250

The 83 D-150 I had was a Slant/833 OD.

Both 4 speeds were available in the D150 with a /6, only the NP435 was available in the W150 with a /6.

the one I saw in a pull apart was a v8 D250, set up with front and rear sway bars and a heavy duty frame mounted tow bar.

guessing it was a NP435, certainly was not an a833 it was a top loaded tranny,, I got the tow bar,, that is another story, I brought my 3/4 inch breaker bar and HD socket set with a 4 foot pipe extension to get the mounting bolts broke loose, only to find the hitch was also welded to the frame,, next day went back with a hack saw (and several blades) and cut the bar loose. got the tow bar cleaned up, shot blasted and mounted on my D150, a trophy to perseverance.

also got the rear sway bar, currently setting in my garage attic, blasted and powder coated, not installed,,

sorry for getting off topic.

My '83 and '84 both had the A833OD behind the slant six, and my '86 had the NP435 behind the slant six. I guess Ma Mopar had no hard and fast rules about what transmission went behind what. I know the '86 came that way from the factory because I bought it new.

Oh, yes, they did. They had to; each and every vehicle configuration (engine, transmission, chassis...) has to be type-approved for emissions compliance, and that's been the case since the Clean Air Act of 1970 and various other regulations took effect. The old myth about "Well, yeah, the book says this and that, but really the factory would build anything you wanted if you knew the right people/would put in whatever parts they had on hand/etc", seldom even a little bit true in the pre-emissions-control era, became completely not true.

Everything I'm seeing says both types of manual transmisssion were available in the '85 D100 with 225 engine.

I went back and reread this post and I believe the reason my 86 had the other transmission is that it was a W150. The 2 wheel drive trucks definitely had A833OD transmissions and so did my 83 van.

I would have to concur as well... although I wonder if region also played a part in what options were popular... I know in this state, trucks, no matter what options were 'work' trucks... haulers, etc.. so I would suspect the reason I see more of the HD vehicles here would be that the option was more popular due to the need for economy with occasional towing or hauling capacity... so far all of these here have been 2WD... I know that the small block 4WD trucks with the manual transmission depending on year was NP 435 and a little later 535...

Makes perfect sense, also don't forget that was right in the middle of the "such-and-such engine/transmission/carburetion/whatever not available in California or at high altitude" fine print era.

(And yeah, I think '89 or '90 was the last year for the D100. Mine had a 318. It was a fine truck. I put too much money into it trying to make the primitive, clunky, cheap-azz factory TBI somewhat less awful; learned that sow's ears don't make good silk purses.)

Definitely appreciate the feedback. This will help sway the decision of my madness.

The way to tell which trans it has quickly is shifter location. A short shifter on the driver's side of the trans hump indicates an a833od trans. A long shifter in the center of the hump and almost under the dash will be an np435 trans.
