Hi Folks,
to my suprise, I just found this on e-bay, making it for me a lil easier obtaining that 400cfm carb and do not have to look into old used let alone NOS Carters. (do have trouble sorting out my used 4294S)
Just wanted to pass this info onto You....if it is quite popular with You...well then....

I never understood the need for this kit. The secondaries are already metered with the air flap so what's the point?

I believe on Edelbrock performers the secondaries are the same size across all CFM models but the difference in CFM rating comes from different primary sizes. Reducing the primaries would give better performance and economy on a smaller motor at part throttle.

Can anyone confirm please if it is the primary or secondary that it is restricting. It's worded like it is the secondary, and if so I don't see the point either.

The part number on that bag is for a pair of main metering jets:

Those look like secondary restrictors, but my understanding is that the secondaries are the same size on all edelbrock performer carbs and the CFM difference comes from the venturi size in the primaries. I think you should contact Edelbrock's tech line.

On the Edelbrock AFB and AVS models, air flow thru the secondaries is controlled by the air flap. The AFB uses a weighted flap, while the AVS use a tension spring. Neither will open unless there is sufficient velocity thru the carb to force the air flap open.

So a venturi restrictor on the secondary is a waste. It is basically money extracted from people who don't understand how their carburator works. Kinda like how the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.

Yes You are right, all 500 to 750 cfm Carters and Eddys share the same secondary BORE Diameter of 1-11/16".

If only the Primary side does affect the cfm Rating of the carb...then why did the Carter engineers change SECONDARY VENTURY diameter at all along the board from 400 to 750cfm?
AFB 9500 sec ventury dia: 1-1/4"
AFB 9625 .....................: 1-9/16"
....and all this when engineers have the company's bean counters on their back, optimizing industrial production for profit?
Don't know..but there must be more to this..
Maybe the change of the booster venturies is used to fine tune a given carb for flow capacity and signal strength....and one main body casting
can be employed...cheaper than various main bodies with their particular ventury diameters?
So These were my thoughts when I ordered several various kits for my friends and me. In a short while they will arrive and I can keep you all posted.

Cheers, Jens
So now the bean Counters are happy again?

...besides: on the Carter Primary side the BORE dia is 1-7/16" from 400 to 625 and its ventury dia: (400) 1-1/8; (500-625) 1-3/16"; (750) 1-7/16.

....sorry mixed up sentence sequence here:

"So now the bean Counters are happy again?" belongs after
"....cheaper than various main bodies with their particular ventury Diameters?"

"Cheers, Jens" to the very last.

Sorry, got confused when editing my English writing.
