Can anybody recommend a shop to build a bulletproof A904?

You can just have them freight a trans to your shop.

Hi ProCycle:

I have two possibilities for you in Oregon, one is Action Transmission in Lafayette on Hwy 99. If Alan Schoonover is still the owner, he built for me the T350 in my GTO and was the only person who impressed me over the years with his knowledge. Also the only builder willing to explain what he would do and why, to make the transmission survive your needs. He is a long time drag racer who did such a good job explaining things to me he lost my business because I build my own now. He was still the owner as of 2016 although he must be at retirement age by now and I wouldn't be surprised if he has sold the shop, although it is still there and listed under his name at the BBB with no complaints.

The trans he built for me in the mid nineties ran mid elevens and 40K street miles, without trouble, I built my ten second motor and had him go through it just because in about 2005. It's still in the car and working fine 15 years later, although doesn't see the street miles much anymore. If he still owns it, or he has sold to to an employee he has trained, then my personal experience is he is the go to guy.

Address: 1085 3rd St, Lafayette, OR 97127
Phone: (503) 864-3356

My second is in Portland by anecdote only. My friend Robert who unfortunately recently passed, owned a large body shop specializing in muscle car restorations and repair, over many years he swore by Marty's Transmissions in NE Portland.

Marty's Transmissions

My best friend was also Roberts bud and did occasional mechanical and electrical work for him. He followed Roberts advice and had Marty's build the trans in his 67 Suburban and is very happy with it after a few years of service.

Hope you find a good builder, I have been burned many times when I was younger, and Alan was the only guy who didn't just give me platitudes about how great they were at building transmissions.

Thanks for the input. I ended up taking it to Sam's Transmissions in Salem. Sam usually has a booth at the local car shows and he did the 904 for my 'Cuda.
He seems pretty knowledgeable about this old hardware.
