What I do when building a slant, is put the full groove on the rear cam journal to make sure of having enough oil to the valve train. But it can lead to excessive oil up top, so I put a restrictor in the rear rocker stand, rather than in the block/head junction. That way I can change the restrictor by just removing the rocker shaft. Here is a good picture of what I do.

What size hole have you found a good one? Could it be possible to use cam bearings for hydraulic lifter engine? Didn't those have grooved rear bearing?

This is something I see posted a lot. The groove is not in the cam bearing. It is on the rear cam journal. I started doing a groove by hand on the cams, after finding the oil holes in the bearing or in the cam itself (solid lifter cams) don't always line up properly. Since the groove I do is inconsistent I don't really know how much oil I will get to the valve train, so I made provision for the adjustment without having to remove the head. I have seen some "new" solid lifter cams from cam companies with the oil groove. So, I am thinking they are using the hydraulic cam blanks for both solid and hydraulic cams.
PS: It is a little tricky doing this. You need to be careful you don't break the drill or tap, since the tooling is going in at an angle.

Clevite #SH115S has a fully grooved rear cam bearing.

"The Slant Daily Garage" channel on YouTube has a video on how he groves the rear cam journal and what size hole he uses for the plug.

Nope. That is the front cam bearing with the groove, not the rear.

Can you post a link for that video? I can't seem to find it.

Charrile, I have a spare ST-21 Racer Brown cam that has the full grove rear journal.
I was wondering how much oil would come up if I used it.
The cam in the engine now has plenty with no groove.
In fact doing compression tests will pump oil up and drip down the push rods.

That must be one of those newer cams made on the later hydraulic blank. I have a ST-21 that doesn't have the groove. Many people don't restrict the oil without problems. I just started doing it about 15 years ago when I had problems with the cam/bearing oil holes not lining up well, and started using the groove. 1st one I grooved was no problem, second one I was flooding the valve train. I just use a "cutoff" wheel in a die grinder, and don't go very deep, but it is "free hand" and not very consistent. My grooves are not as large as the "factory" grooves. I'm thinking you might be over oiled without a restrictor. If you will have the head off, just put the threads in the rocker stand. Then if you need it, it is simple to add the restrictor.

Thanks. I saw that video awhile back. Just forgot about it. I just use a homemade "V"- block setup, but with rollers. I was just using the die grinder by hand and rotating by hand. I like his drive system.

Charlie, I didn't really understand what you were trying to tell me when you described this to me on the phone. I have already done it and put the restrictor in the block.... Wish I had seen this first.
BTW, The YouTube vid is from SlantDailyGarage, the guys name is Sean Polido and the size hole he recommends IIRC is .109. The closest bit I had was .107.
The part of the vid that impressed me is how long it took oil to appear at the rockers in stock condition (cold)...nearly a full minute. Then after the mods, about 5 seconds.
