I'm going to be running a Mopar vacuum advance distributor and a Standard UC16 coil in my new build, and thinking about using a HEI module instead of the Mopar ignition box.. Has anyone done this and mounted the HEI module further away, like under the dash? It's a ratrod/T-bucket type build and the connectors on those 4-pin modules don't look very weather resistant.. Google ai, which is often full of brown stuff, said the hei module needs to be mounted right next to or on the distributor..something about signal loss..thanks

Many people here have mounted them on mopars. One of the most important things is good quality terminals properly crimped AND mounting the HEI unit to something metal to act as a heatsink. Chunks of aluminum are good choices, some have used inner fenders to mount them. Use a good thermal paste where the hei unit attaches to the heatsink.

And yes the HEI doesn't look weather proof but they seem to hold up fairly well under a hood.

I've read several on the subject, including that one, and if I remember correctly it says that an oil filled old style coil like the UC16 isn't optimal for maximum performance, but that it will work.. On a lot of forums (not just mopar), that combination is commonly used when people want hei but want to keep a classic look.. I've made a heavy stainless coil bracket that's rubber isolated, so if the oil one dies quickly I'll look for a more modern epoxy one, or I have a bunch of 91-01 Jeep ones that might work.. (I also picked up a couple of the 96-00 heat sinks at the junkyard today that GM used on their remote coil/hei module combos)..

UC16 is what I have been running on my trucks for the last 10 years. Considering what the lean burn systems on these trucks ran like, I don't think that coil will be an issue.

I had recently dissected a dead Mopar-type ignition module, and I used its heat sink to mount a HEI module.

Rick is working on a rather creative "heat sink" for his; I'd like to see pictures when it's done.
