It's oil change time now that the roads are salt free. For 18 years now I have been using a Napa 1806 oil filter. This last one seemed to leak down over night causing the low oil light to be slow going out on start-up compared to previous filters. It is my understanding that Napa's filter supplier changed, and perhaps the new line is not constructed the same as the old units.

Is there a different recommended filter to prevent the drawn-out low pressure time (~5 seconds) at start up? I aways have used 10W30 oil.

I have noticed the same thing with the last two that I bought. Two different engines even.

Does your oil pump have the stand pipe tube? Mine came loose a few year ago and I suspect it was causing a slow oil pressure rise...

My daily driver gets an oil + filter change once a year, and the "quality" of parts store filters is to the point where I spend the premium price for Fleetguard or Donaldson.

The oil pump never had a stand pipe as long as I have had the car; 18 years.

Dan, is the Fleetguard number FJ-3103 which replaces LF701 the filter you use?

Naw, it's a completely non-Slant-6 engine. But if I were shopping for a dependably-very-good oil filter for a Slant-6 today, it'd be a Fleetguard LF3487 or Donaldson PS50008 (premium media, no standpipe),

or Fleetguard LF551A (no standpipe),

or Fleetguard LF701 or Donaldson PS54403 (should have standpipe but I haven't looked).

As for what happened to NAPA's filters:

They're not made by Wix anymore. Now they're made by a Chinese outfit called Premium Guard. You can see an interesting coupla videos here and here. In the first video, a shop owner raises eyebrows and objections to the switch. In the second video, he recants and says he was contacted by NAPA and they educated him, you see, that there is no reason to object to the Chinese filters because they meet all NAPA specifications.

Maybe the Chinese filters really are awesome, or maybe he's leaving out the part where he got threatened and/or bribed and/or ???? between the first and second videos.

Seriously: Are they lower quality? Almost certainly yes, along with the quality of virtually all other auto parts for all kinds of vehicles now.

As to "meets all NAPA specifications": Uh-huh, right, but those specs aren't carved in stone, and when MBAs (…private-equity firms, hedge funds…) replace engineers, the first question they ask is "How much cheaper can we make these and still get away with it?".
