I am thinking of upgrading from stock 14x4.5 wheels with the small bolt pattern to aftermarket ones. I have seen on ebay conversion plates? that convert to the big bolt spacing. Has anyone seen/used these? They look like they just slide onto the spindles, is this right? Also, did Ma Mopar ever make the rallyes in 14x7 small bolt patterns? I know about the 14x6 ones. I'm sure it's rather obvious I'm new to the forum, as well as tinkering with cars. :oops: Any insight is appreciated greatly! :?

I remember seeing a friends car that had aftermarket "lowrider" low profile rims. These rims had a bunch of spokes, and one big (probably 3") single nut in the center that held it on.

In that situation, the adapter plate was bolted onto the drum via the original wheel studs, then the plate had a barrel extending out in the center with threads on it to accept the large nut.

Btw, do you have a link to the ones your refering to on ebay? I just tried searching there but came up empty.

My thoughts... Those plates don't touch the spindles. First, the holes in the center seem way too big. Second, if they did contact the spindles you'd need some sort of bearing. I believe they just sit on the drum or rotor hubs.

Hmmm I wonder if you can move the studs on these so they can be used as big bolt to small bolt pattern adapters (backwards from their intended use). That way one can use the more readily availible big bolt pattern single piston disc brakes with small bolt pattern wheels and not have to carry around two different spares.

These plates would mess with backspacing but I guess that is not too big of a concern because the plate seems to be thin enough. What about alignment though?

You're right Pierre, they look like they attach to the drums or hubs. Your insights on possible problems with backspacing and alignment mirror my own thoughts.

I wonder if anyone else has run across these things?

Here is another option if you're considering adaptors. They still sit on the hub. These guys will make any combination you want, but you may still end up with the backspacing/alignment concerns (I think he told me they were 1/2 inch thick). He quoted me $65 US each for 5/4" to 5/5.5" (for 20" ram wheels). However I haven't pursued this. I found the wheels I like in 18" 5/4.5" (eagle alloys) so I'm switching to LBP all around. I also discovered that any tire size over 18" ($200 ea) is not economical to buy (19"=$450 ea and 20"=$600 ea). They've got a ton of suppliers and pictures/sizes/prices listed for lots of rims.

Currently I have the factory steel with hubcaps. If I stay with my SBP, I'm torn between the factory Rallyes and the Cragar SS. I like the look of the Cragars (14x6) a little bit more than the Rallyes, but I just found a place that sells repros of the Rallyes in 14x7 (even a 15x7 SBP). Call me crazy, but I would prefer at least a 7" rim. This car is my driver, not a racer so I'm not worried about weight.
If I do end up switching to the LBP, I have no idea what to get as of now. :roll:

I like the rallyes but I figure by the time I find a good set of SBP rallyes I'll be spending the same as going all out on a set of eagles ($150 US each). I know a guy who's got a set of small bolt Cragers but I can't get him to sell :x .

I agree with you on the width, little pizza cutters aren't going to keep you on the road as well as something wider.

i would properly convert the car the the large bolt pattern front disk brakes you could do for less than $400 and get a nice set of lbp ralleys for cheap, since sbp ralleys are super expensive. this will forever put an end to the sbp lug pattern on your car as well as give you much better brakes. i dont have much faith in an adapter of any kind that holds a wheel on.

also if your worried about have in 2 different bolt patterns, its easy to change the rear axles, or if you want to cheap out, you can have the axle and drums re-drilled to be lbp, but i would just change the axles or get from a later model car. seeing this is a /6 forum, i imagine your car has the 7.25 rear, shouldnt be hard to get a complete 73-6 abody rear with lbp and bigger brakes for around $50 or less. ususally people give them away. i just junked one.

if you plan on doing the work your self, it wont cost that much and will be a huge improvement, however if you pay someone to do it, it'll prob cost alot.

parts you will need to get to convert to disk brakes are: basically everything off a disk brake donor car, so you'll need for both sides: upper control arm, knucke assembley(spindle,rotor,caliperbracket), caliper, brake hose, and lower ball joint(which i would replace), in addition you will also need a disk brake master cylender and proportioning valve.

i like to pull the whole thing as a unit as seen below in the pic. i find it easy to do,but you have to have the right tools.
