I'm looking at changing my oil pump due to leakage. For $65 (as opposed to $35) at NAPA I can get a high performance oil pump.

Is that recommended? What should I be looking for/watching out for?

Thanks, Joe

The general consensus here seems to be stick with the stock pump. Hi-performance pumps seem to put too much stress on the oil pump drive gear, leading to pre-mature oil pump gear or cam gear failure.

I currently am running a hi-volume pump. It provides 40 psi at hot idle, and 60 psi at anything over 1200 rpm (this is on a rebuild with 2.5 miles---my bearings are still tight) When I pulled the pump for my rebuild, it had about 20,000 miles on it, and the pump gear was worn about 50-60% . Cam gear was not showing any signs of wear.

As long as you are getting the 'rule of thumb' 10 psi of oil pressure per 1000 rpm, the stock pump will be your best, most reliable bet.

Try a PM to Doc and see if he has any gears left from the batch he had hardened awhile back. A bunch of us stocked up at that time for our future needs.

Red and Super6--

Thanks for your help. Glad to know I can save a little $ and it won't effect things at all.

Those articles were really helpful, too.
