Hi all,

The brakeline that goes from the proportioning valve towards the back of my '78 d100 truck has rusted through. I got some line of the right diameter, but both ends of the line have small fittings, which is too small to thread into the prop valve. I can't seem to find lines with the big fitting on one end and the smaller fitting on the other end. It doesn't have to be specifically for the truck, a straight line of just about any length can be made to work in my situation. I just need one with the right end for the prop valve.

Lots of places make fuel and brake lines. I have orderd from Right Stuff Detailing, but others you can try are classic tube and inline tube. All are on the web.

Some auto places like NAPA have a short adaptor line available with the big nut on one end and the regular small nut on the other end. Then just used a union coupler available from them to connect that short line to your new longer line. I'm doing that project on my '87 truck now. However , I have a double flaring tool and might be able to use the old nut if it comes loose, otherwise I'll look at that adaptor line from NAPA. My local NAPA has them in stock.

I tried using my flaring tool (double) to reuse that nut. It leaked, which I think says more about my flaring ability than the flaring tool. I also found an adapter to go from the small nut of the line I got at autozone to the prop valve, but that leaked. It turned out that the beveled part in the adapter was wrong for the type of flare the line had, so it wouldn't seal. I must have leaked a quart of brake fluid out during all this. I didn't try napa-I guess that's my next step.

It can be maddening to find the correct adapter. Take all the applicable parts to the parts store and hopefully you will encounter a freindly counter person to help.
I just did this when I installed a dual M/C on my '64 Dart. Peronally, I would try the double flare option with the original fitting again. The more fittings, the more possibility of leaks.

I always reuse the original fittings unless they are too badly rusted. After 20+ years of hit and miss flaring, I found that flares come out a lot better if you dress the end of the tube with a file before the first crimp. :shock:

By any chance do you have the part number for the napa adapter line? I went to them, and they showed me their brake lines. I didn't see any type of adapter lines-I don't know if that particular store doesn't carry them, or if the person who took me to the lines didn't know that there were adapter lines somewhere else in the store.
