a) goto parts store
b) buy synthetic oil
c) pure in to slantsix.
done, just like any other motor. And once you start using it you dont want to switch back or mix with normal oil.

Should I be using synthetic? I'd like to protect my new engine as best as possible.

Yes. Any engine that doesn't leak or burn oil should use synthetic.

I've used Mobil 1 in my turbo Duster since I bought it new. I change oil and filter every 5000 miles. At 100,000 miles I pulled the head, and could still see the honing marks in the cylinders. I'm a believer, and even use it in my lawn mower. The engine is much cleaner than engines I've seen using conventional oils. The inside of the valve cover and the valve train aren't coated with blank gunk.

Other synthetics may be just as good. I've never seen any comparison other than some propaganda from some of the companies.

You should run conventional oil in the engine until it is broken in (at least 500 miles). If you run synthetic right from the start, the engine won't wear enough to break in until much later.
