HI all

OK I have got some noise coming from the rear of my 67 dart.

I'm suspecting the rear wheel bearings.

I took the wheels off to have a look

the Pasinger side is leaking oil.

But the drivers side will move in and out about a 1/4 inch

IS This NORMAL ? ? ? ?

or is somthing seriously worn/broaken.


advice/ideas appreciated

That's bad no matter what axle is under the car. Chances are it's a 7 1/4 and the driver's side bearing is bad. I say pull both axles and replace the bearings.

the older 7-1/4s like yours had tapered bearings pressed onto the axle. Haven't seen one in a while, but I believe that theyre like the 8-3/4 with the adjuster on one side for endplay. If youre leaking fluid theyre gonna have to come out anyway because the seal is on the axle behind the bearing which will get ruined pressing it off to change the seal. Did that one also have a seal insde the axle tube?? I don't remember. some had 2 seals on each side.

My 7 1/4" rear in my '68 Dart had caged ball bearings. I learned this some years ago while driving and having a catastrophic bearing failure on the highway. What year was the switch over?

was this caged ball bearing pressed onto the axle or in the housing, with the axle retained by C clips?? If the axle flange has holes between the studs for a socket to get in there to reach the flange nuts its not a C clip rear. Is this the orig housing in your 68? I have worked on more late 70s and 80s cars that were all C clip style. (my 90 Dakota even had a C clip 7-1/4 in it; now has an 8-1/4 since my brother in law grenaded the 7-1/4)
Not sure the exact year, but I think it was like 74-75-76 area when they switched. Anyone got a bearing catalog? that would be a way to tell.

Non c-clip. (the rear wheel with axle attached went flying down the road!) The caged ball bearings were pressed onto the axles. I no longer have the rear. After that incident, I went to an 8 3/4" just as a "might as well replace it if I gotta replace it."
