Which are better and why? The older style with the biscuit mounts or the newer style with the spool mounts.

Spool type, hands down, no brainer.
Spool type mounts last longer, they will contain the engine even when worn-out or broken, they can be stiffened by filling the voids in the rubber and most of all, these make engine "drop-ins" a snap.

If you have a 67 or later A-Body and do lots of engine swaps or if you are about to do front end work, swap-over the K-frame to the spool type while you are in there.

Okay, thanks for the info. But will I have to use the idler arm and associated steering linkage from the donor vehicle? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

The spool K's use the "through bolt" type idler arm. (68-76) there are a few different center links tat all swap in, I used the 68-72 type because it has the deepest "U" and gets me the most oil pan clearance.

Here's another, related question: does anybody refurbish these (a-la Damper Dudes)? I was shopping for new spool types awhile ago and even the ones bearing the names of supposedly-reputable American companies were "hecho en Mejico" and very poorly made.
I found one Borg Warner (@ an independent auto parts store) which had obviously been on the shelf for years---the difference in quality was striking. Any American companies still making good ones? Thanks.
