Post subject: Question for the Doc.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 04, 2001 9:57 pm
I've read an answer to someone's question you posted. Drilling a larger hole in early lower control arms to accept the later, larger lower balljoints from 73-76 disc brake cars. Were there any complications in doing this? Did this prove to be a reliable modification? As far as the upper arms, did you just swap them for the 73-76 arms or did you have a trick for them as well? Sorry about all the questions but I only ask for what I don't know. Thanks for answers that you may give.

My comment was that I have "drilled-out" the lower ball joint mounting holes (9 inch drum brake)in order to bolt them onto the early K-H 4 piston Disc Braake spindles. I have never drill-out the control arms.

If you are swapping to the later single piston Discs, your lower control arms will work, you will need the correct (later) ball joints and upper A-Arms.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. So if I'm correctly understanding you now you say that the 9 inch drum lower contrl arms will bolt on to the 73-76 disc brake balljoints and all I will need to do is swap my upper arms with the 73-76 upper control arms to mate them with the 73-76 disc brake spindels? Thank you for bearing with me.

By Jove, I believe he's got it! Yes,you are now understanding it correctly.....early lower arm, later lower ball joint, later upper and ball joint, disc spindle, rotor, and caliper brkt.

If in doubt and you need some 73-76 part numbers to verify, you can go over to slantsix.com and
look up a long post I submitted that had all the part numbers for the disc brake front ends from the 1976 Parts catalog.... that should clear a lot of things up (or give you some invaluable junkyard reference material).
