Hi Lou, What carb were you using with that combo in the green dart??
Also is it a long rod engine or is it just a 225 w/225 rods?? Did you shave
the block and head or just head?? Think that I could get away with 3000 stall?? Thanx!

I used several carbs - hly 600 4bbl, Edel 600 4bbl, 670 2bbl TBI w/hly and then megasquirt computer... Best 1/4 mile was with tuned Edel 600 4bbl, but that was with fresher motor.

225 rods and stock replacement cast MP (Fed Mog??) 0.060" pistons. No block shaving, lots of head shaving.

As I said, I ran low 14s with a 3000-3200 stall converter, so yes it should work for you.

Lou

0.080" on the intake side, 0.180" on the plug side. Stock pushrods BARELY work, but I bent/broke a few and didn't like the geometry, so got some custom ones about 0.2" shorter (using 0.1" longer SBC valves too).

.080 shave on the intake side?? I've havent heard of that before...(any benefits to that?)
Anything else to be noted on a lot of head shaving like that or anything to watch out for??
Didnt know you could take .180 off of the head either  !!!

Lou had his head angle milled. It was cut .080" on the manifold side of the head and .180" on the plug side. I'm wondering if his intake manifold is noticeably tilted?

Also the 2bbl is a poor choice. (post by Joshie225)

It'll need more when I get to that point but it works pretty good now!

A 2bbl may not be the best choice but it's far from a poor choice. The #4412 universal 500cfm 2300 is only 15cfm less than the 390 4bbl (rated at the same hg).

Advantages of a 2300 Holley vs 4150/4160...
only 2 jets to change
1 float to set
1 float to stick and flood
1 bowl to leak
1 less fuel line or transfer tube to leak
jets are always covered during accleration if mounted like a OEM BBD

Disadvantages...
15cfm less
not as tuneable for fuel distribution due to 2 bores available, vs 4 bores, to stagger jet

If you really stare, you might see an angle, but I can't remember if I've actually seen it. I did the angle mill using advice from Meril Bruner, passed on to me in 1992. Couldn't tell you if it helps or not, but I've had no ill effects. Meril did his 0 on the manifold side and 0.200" on the plug side. You can also angle mill the head bolt bosses on the top of the head.

Do you know if it is necessary to "correct" the headbolt holes? Considering the angle.

Thanks

I did not angle mill my bolt hole bosses (0.100" differential mill). Could be a problem with a 0.200" differential?? No experience. Meril said he angled them, IIRC.

How about throttle response and fuel economy? Air flows a lot more slowly through the 2bbl's venturis at cruise than the primaries of a 390 4bbl.

BTW, I've never had a float bowl leak on my 390. In fact of all the Holleys I've owned only one had a float bowl leak and it was a 2nd hand 2bbl. I've only had the transfer tube leak once as I got in a hurry and didn't put the 0-ring on the tube itself. My two cases of flooding have been from dirt on the primary needle. I think the main benefit of the 2bbl is one you didn't mention. Cost.

Hyster used to use double washers like that for chain anchor seats.
