To install tie rod ends and control arm bushings (upper and lower) do you need special tools? How is it done?

You need a pickle fork to whack the ball joints out.
They are cheap andavailable at any auto parts place.
What I like better are the special tool (available from
Just Suspension among others that basically is a bolt
in a retainer that presses the joint out as you turn the bolt.

To put the tie rod ends back on, you just keep turning the nut till it reaches the proper torque setting?

I use a ball joint press to install the control arm bushings . I use an air chisel to remove them.

I'd like to know the answer to this, including idler arm.

Yes, that's exactly how they work.

And if you get a pickle fork, be sure to buy a unit that was made entirely in one piece. I bought one that apparently had a business end made from bar stock welded onto a hollow tubular handle. It lasted just long enough to get all the items on my suspension pulled before the weld shattered and the handle came off.
