Here's the situation: I've got a BBP 7.25 rear end from a '73 318 Dart.

My '65 Valiant has a SBP 7.25 rear end from a '74 Scamp in it.

Can I just swap the axles/brake assemblies from the BBP rear to the rear that's already in the Val? That would be easier than swapping out the whole rear end assembly, and I know the rear that's there now is nice'n'quiet.

Thanks!

No, brakes are entirely different.

I know. I was thinking of the swapping the entire brake assemblies- backing plates and all. Will it work if I do that, or is something else different?

No. The axle tube ends are completely different. The bearings on the axles are different too. SBP axles/ brakes have 4 mounting holes in the backing plates. BBP axles/brakes have 5.

OK, this brings up another question. Can a carrier assembly and ring & pinion from a SBP 7.25 be swapped into an LBP housing and axles?

I would assume so - www.ringpinion.com doesn't differentiate years.

I swapped my 65 sbp 3.23 gears into my 75 bbp assembly with no issues. It took mebbe 2 hours and required no special tools but I had to be innovative with drifts and 1/2"drive extensions.

I guess the specific question is will a Sure Grip from an early A - say a 65 Dart, fit properly into a LBP 7.25? If the gears won't fit it's a deal breaker but if the sure grip fits it's icing on the cake.

A Quick Answer to Valiantor' S question:

No, The Axle tubes are different and the Axles are different.

THe early type has No C Clips. The Later type does; Bearings are different
too.
To accomplish What you are trying to do Swap the entire Housing and Axle assembly.

Greg

Only the housing ends changed to accomodate the big bearings. I have a 65 SG unit in a 75 lbp housing in my car. Carriers and gears all swap although I can't vouch for the real early ones. I have never yet seen a 7 1/4 with c-clips.

Thanks. That's what I suspected but it's nice to have some confirmation.

Sorry About the BAd info,

I must have confused the Later 7.25's with the 8.25's

Well, the 8.25 would be more desireable but the 7.25 in question is essentially free. The sure grip is available at reasonable cost and I already have the 3.23 gears. I will be able to put the rear axle together for very nominal cost and since I am unlikely to seriously stress it I don't anticipate any serious problems with it. If it fails then I'll address the issue at that time.
