 Post subject: Header Paint
PostPosted: Sat Feb 16, 2002 7:25 am
Any recommendations on what kind of Header paint to use on a new set of headers? The last set I installed 15 years ago, I painted black. But shortly after running them they turned white for about 3 or 4" out from the head. Is there any way to keep the paint on and the color it is supposed to be for a reasonable amount of time.Or is that just the nature of the beast/

Thanks for all your help.

I am real happy with POR-20 from Restomotive Laboratories. Anyway the attached picture is the headers after 10k miles. I have had to touch up a couple spots right where the tubes turn down from the flange and urder the car where they get road blasted.

Real good Stuff! :-)

Thanks for the info Dave. I could not view the picture, though?

Just something else to think about,I sent my hedders out and had them coated. The company had lots of colors and they said if the coating came off they would fix them for free. The only bad part it ran around $120.00 to coat them.

Is this a cerametallic coating? If so, that price, though a hefty chunk of change, is alot cheaper than I've seen quoted. Supposedly, those cerametallic coatings significantly reduce the heat radiated by headers...any comment on that? That could be a consideration that would impact longevity of starters and engine block paint (especially with block huggers). What's the outfit's name. website, address and/or phone#? Thanks.

They are located near Portland,Or. When I sent my hedders in they looked pretty sad. I used all new 1 5/8 tubing and Tig welded them all together, but they looked like I just welded them. I also thought about paint and than I met Russ at the Bonneville Salt Flats were he was racing a inline Chev 292. I notice his hedders and they looked great. This is where he talked me into sending him my hedders. After he finished them and where installed I had many people remark on the quality of his workmanship. All I can say he did a great job!

Dave M...

Will definitely bookmark the site...could come in handy this spring. I've got relatives up in Portland, so maybe I'll kill 2 birds with 1 stone! Do you remember about what the turnaround time on coating your headers was? Thanks for the tip.

I think it took around two weeks. If you call Russ ahead of time I'm sure he could make some kind of arangement if you are on a tight time frame.
