I need to get my truck through inspection, so I'm finally addressing my horn problem. I get a buzzing at the Painless Wiring replacement fusebox, but no honk.

So I try to make sure that the horn itself works by jumping it to the battery. It doesn't work, so I get a new horn.

This horn doesn't honk when attached directly to the battery either. How come? Do I need a relay? I thought that there was a relay in the Painless fusebox--do I need another one?

Thanks,

Joe

Make sure the horn is properly grounded.

Most US horns have a grounded case to complete the circuit; many foriegn horns are floating and one of the 2 pins must be grounded for them to work. I've seen brand new universal replacements horns from the same vendor (F-something) with identical model numbers on the shelf with with some of one kind and some of the other.

Their name is ironic, given the degree and frequency of the pain caused by "painless" wiring's stuff. :-(

If you're getting a buzzing at the fusebox, it probably means your horn relay (installed there) is faulty.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll check the grounding of the horn.

Anyone have a part number for a nice generic horn relay?

Joe

If Painless Wiring are still using GM-style fuseboxes, the relay you need is probably something like a Standard HR151 is probably what's called for:
