Is there anywhere to put the connection for the oil pressure gauge other than on the pump itself?

You can drill and tap the main oil galley, a cast-in tube that runs from the oil pump cavity to the rear of the block. This is briefly described in Doc's article on block preparation. Here is a link to the article

Later blocks have a boss cast in near the rear reinforcing web which makes an ideal place to mount a pressure sending gauge. I believe you need a 1/8 NPT threaded hole but you should double check that. Once drilled it's hard to undrill.
