 Post subject: running hot

I have an unknown replacement /6. It was low mileage but appeared to have been poorly maintained. At startup it ran hot. Radiator has been recently serviced, new 180 deg. thermostat. I plan to get a new bottom radiator hose which looks suspicious. But the real problem seems to be block passages. I removed the engine drain plug, and nothing comes out even when running. Any remedy for this.

Push a screw driver in the hole and loosen up the rust so it will drain. You can also use a coat hanger once you are able to break through the crud. Try to flush it out with some radiator flush. Then add anti-freeze to keep it cool and from rusting up again.

With an engine as crudded-up as yours seems to be, you will need something a good deal stronger than a "radiator flush" chemical. See this thread and this one .

Just a FYI. We had a slanter that ran hot and beat our heads trying to figure it out. Turned out being a waterpump impeller that was loose and spinning on the shaft. No play in the bearing no leaks but a bad waterpump.

Aggressive Ted's screwdriver/coathanger ream job seems to have done the trick. :!: I was ready to order the chemical peel recommended by Slantsix Dan, (his word is law around here), but might hold back on the $20.00 investment for now, until cash flow picks up. I flushed everything out with some can of flushing stuff that I had on hand, and flow is way improved. On to transmission and rearend for next big problem. Thanks for all help.

Be careful, you're now looking at a bunch of looѕened-up crud floating around through the cooling ѕystem. It will tend to clog up your radiator, ѕo keep a ѕharp eye on thingѕ. Remove the rad cap from time to time and look at the topѕ of the tubeѕ to check for chipѕ and chunkѕ.

Once you get the water jacket unclogged and flushed out here is another thing to try.

If you want that engine to really run cold, use the MOPAR 5 blade flex fan and clutch fan part number DCC-4120758 in the Summit catalog. I bought one because my old clutch fan lost it's seal and all the oil drained out which caused it to lock up full time. The local NAPA and other Parts stores didn't have the right depth clutch fan units. They all were too long and would hit the radiator. As it is mine is about 1/2" or so away. It runs much cooler than the stock 4 blade and the mileage went up about 1.5 to 2 miles per gallon. You definitely don't need a fan shroud.

This unit will definitely keep you car running cold. I run a 195 degree stat just to get some heat. In hotter climates it should work very well. :)
