Hello all, I have a 68 225 w/ the drool tube head. will a later model peanut plug head go onto it?Will I have to run the later rocker assembly? I guess I just need to know the interchange......I am trying to get away from the drool tube for my race motor.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!
Andrew

Andrew,

I am using a 1978 peanut plug head, instead of the 1974 drool tube head on mine with no problem. Push rods and all fit just fine. I kept the 78 rocker assembly that cam with the head. I believe the assembly is interchangeable.

I never like the drool tubes either. The new head does keep the engine allot cleaner. I have about 24,000 on it since the rebuild. Just be sure to seal the lower edge of the block with a little extra sealant and you will be fine. See Docs post for reference. See the "Oil leaking from block" post. It is on page two at the moment.

You can plug any slant head on your block, and the assemblies are interchangeable (except the 1981-1987 rocker arms meant for the no adjust hydro cam)...

One thing to note for the record I have a 1979 head, and the rear bolt on the rocker shaft is smaller (bore in the rocker shaft is also drilled slightly smaller) than the pre-78 heads (might be the 'tween change before the hydro cam heads came out...)

Yes, the peanut plug heads I have seen through 1979 have all been adjustable.

Hello Kidd!

You will find a thread in the forum in which various guys report various numbers of manifold studs holes going into the water jacket. Although a curiosity that they vary, it suggests that whatever head you use you might want to be sure to seal ALL the studs from water leaks unless you know for certain a hole doesn't need it.

And not to steal from Doc, but I have a peanut head I would give away for shipping even though I had it hot tanked and magnafluxed as perfect. I am doing a great parts get gone since I basically finished my project.
