My 74 Dart needs R-12 for the a/c. I found somebody with three cans and he said, "make me an offer." How much should I offer without insulting him or overpaying?

$25.00 a can is a STEAL. A few years ago I heard that R12 was the second most smuggled thing in to this country behind cocaine. Around here, if you can find R12 it goes for $1200 and up for a 30# can. I haven't seen a little can in 10 tears or so. Funny thing is I remember "back in the day" using it to "shrink" freeze plugs to make them easier to put in.

I got a 30 # drum of R-12, at my local Advance Auto Parts store, last month for $700. $20-$25 for a 12 oz can is about right. Larger can a little more. Should be a little over $2 per oz.

Make sure the valve is closed and put a leakproof cap on the 30# canister........

Awhile back I dug out my 30# canister from my shed to find out it was empty. :(

I always do that. I might need some of the refrigerants, I have on hand from 20 years ago. :lol: R-11, R-12, R-22, R-500, R-502.

It's a shame you can't still buy R-12 at the parts store. DuPont conned us and the federal government told us that freon was damaging the ozone layer. Actually their exclusive patent on R-12 was about to expire, and this massive public relations lie convinced all of us to believe R-134 was better and more environmentally safe. Well, guess what. R-134 is about to be removed from autos. (Yep, DuPont's exclusive patent is running out again.) It may take two or three years, but you can expect the loss of the exclusive patent on R-134 to come out with a "better" refrigerant, and the automobile industry will convert.

Last I heard, DuPont was still manufacturing R-12 and selling it to Mexico and South America. Who needs R-12 today? We have that idiot Gore. How many of you have had a nice warm winter due to global warming?

The patent on R12 expired many decades ago, long before more than about three people in the world knew what the ozone layer was. Look it up for yourself; the US Patent Office is fully online. And R134a is to be phased out because it's a greenhouse gas, not because of an expired patent. This babble about expired patents and massive public lies is utterly without basis in fact, but that doesn't stop the usual froth-mouthed suspects on AM talkback radio from repeating it again and again and again and again.

Actually, one of the refrigerants, being considered for use in mobile A/C is that well known greenhouse gas "carbon dioxide".

Actually, the claim is, that the chlorine molecules in R-12 and other similar refrigerants, deplete the ozone layer. R-134a (it has no chlorine molecule) is now being listed as contributing to the "greenhouse" effect. I am not going to make this a political discussion.

I really appreciate this website. I especially cherish SlantSixDan's knowledge and assistance. It's tax season at my office. I needed a good laugh. I wish I had made a bet that Dan would respond to my freon ranting. Got you, Dan!
