Well I made it but without my car.I stopped at the motor shop on my way out of town and told the guy "2 years and $15,000.00 and I'm driving a rental". It bummed me out.But I stopped in on Moday on the way home and the motor is 95% done.I was glad to me some of my fellow slanters in person.I bought a sign and had slanters there sign it.It will go on my wall.I have posted a few photos from Vegas on my photo sight

I was thinking that any Slant events I go to I'll bring the sign and have anyone with a Slant sign it for a keep-sake.Going to pick my motor up on friday.I'll post someadditional phots next week and also the specs.Sure would have liked to race it,soon though.Anyone coming to Arizona for Mopars and The Mountain? Let me know and I'll do anything I can to help out.

I recognize that sign emptypockett! :D

Sweet looking ride too! (Beats my Hooptie standing!)

The Arizona get together is a bit beyond my range. The Vegas trip came to $419 in gas alone. If I get my 390 Holley set back up on the new engine, I may be able to make longer road trips again. I'll have to carry the 600 in the trunk, or listen to Fopar and mount a Carter up and be done with it.

I look forward to seeing you at some of this year's races! Redding? Perhaps Samoa in Eureka? That is one I don't want to miss! Sea level should be as good as it gets!

Shoot me a PM sometime!

CJ

I will likely be at the Prescott show. It's a small show and no racing but always has some high quality cars.

I wonder if any of my old Mopar buddies from the Flagstaff Cruisers car club are going to be there...

Spring time always makes me feel home sick.

I was just checking out your photos again... Would you consider sending Seymour a little write up on your build for the newsletter? He loves to feature cars being built by new faces. You've got a nice build going on with some interesting stuff like the military surplus engine, etc. I was just telling him about you taking that sign to have people sign for you and a little about your car.

He works "old school", so you'll need to send him the information via snail mail and hard copy glossy type photos are the best. He prefers 4X6 prints if you can get them. If you just have the digital photos, you'll need to print them on good quality paper so he can put them in the newsletter.

Wouldn't it be cool to have your car featured in an international racing publication? Cool! 8)

David F. has attended the Vegas race a few times now, one year he entered his restored 63 SL6 Dart in the Mopar Muscle "Street Car Challenge" and did well.
In a "weak moment" David calls Clifford and orders a hotter cam, lifters, springs and pushrods... they sell him a hydrualic cam and lifters, mechanical pushrods and springs and tell him that this stuff will work with his adjustable rocker arms, if he sets them to zero lash.

David installs all the Clifford supplied parts, gets the car running, then heads out to Las Vegas from LA. By the time he gets to Vegas... bad noises are coming out of the engine so Saturday morning he pulls the valve cover.

Image

He finds a broken push rod and a few more with "smoked and smashed" ends. Metal dust is everywhere and nothing is getting oil.... David crys for help so we review the options and sent him over to the swap meet to find a solid cam, lifters, pushrods. He comes back to the pits with the needed parts. We decide to take a chance and put the solid lifters on the hydro. cam, seeing that pulling the cam was to big of a "between rounds" race pit fix job. Dave gets to work fishing-out lifters with a long magnet.

Image

So the first hydro lifter comes out and it has a side oil hole, so it's not even the correct lifter for the hydro SL6 application.
David gets everything assembled and I lash the valves... "feeling" / listening our way into a .006 In / .008 Ex setting. The good news, the engine is running pretty good, the bad news, not getting oil to the rockers. I pull the lower, rear head bolt and start the engine, only a trickle of oil after a few minutes of running. Looks like another mis-drilled cam. It's late in the day so I give Dave some things to do that night... change the oil and filter and find a squirt type oil can, we are both in "just get you home" mode.

Not so fast... I make a quick trip to the hardware store on Sunday morning and get some brass fittings and 1/4 inch copper tube, it's time for a SL6 oil system "by-pass" operation!
(Is there a doctor at the track?... Yes!)

Image

Heres the plan, we "T" into the oil pump with the brass fittings & copper tube, come-up and into the rocker arm shaft so we get around the #4 cam journal blockage.
Good thing, there was plenty of willing help in the pits! (bored SL6 racers, between runs)

Image

The biggest challenge was stringing the copper tube through the valve cover, which Fopar donated to the cause. We had to drill a hole into the side of the valve cover and also through the pressed-in end plug on the rocker shaft, in order to install the copper tube.

Image

Everything gets installed and we start it up.... now we have lots of oil at the rocker arms!
Turn It Off!!... oil is getting out of the hole in the side of the valve cover... we make a cardboard gasket, glue it down with RTV and hold everything in place with a chunk of rubber hose... oil leak fixed!

Image

Everyone seem relieved.... and then the track called the SL6 cars for the first round of eliminations... David was in and a happy man!

Doug,

I want to say thank you for helping David F. with his Clifford Performance induced oiling problems.

Have you called Clifford? Plan to?

Joshua

I think that story sums up why I would want to drive 1000 miles to MATS. Good story...good friends.

Any way to get a hold of this guy? I would really like to know how he mounted his seats.

Took some pictures of his car the year he entered it in the Real Street Challenge, but didn't think to look at the mounting.

I sent you a PM with David's phone number, be sure to tell him he is now "published" on the .org web site.

Dave has already call Clifford and he got the expected "run-around". Good thing he paid with a well known credit card, he is going to his card company to get a refund. He has already called Erson and they set him-up with a solid lifter 270 degree cam and lifter set so he can get everything "cleaned-up" after having a bunch of racers hack on his car.
