guys,

i have a 170 that i am thinking about turbocharging. I also have a turbo from a mitsubishi 2.5. do i have a piston option with the 170 motor? would the 2.2 pistons work in this application?? also, wouldnt the smaller motor be more responsive to the smaller turbos that are so readily avalable?

In theory it should. . . similar turbo output, less displacement to fill with charged air.

You're going to have very low compression if you just put in a set of 2.2 Turbo pistons into a 170. They drop the compression to unacceptably low levels on a 225 if you don't put in 198 rods, and it'd be worse (I'm guessing around 6:1) on a 170.

Hey Matt,

What does the CR work out to be when using 2.2 pistons with the 225 rods/crank? Anywhere near 7.5:1? I tried calculating it before, but I wasn't sure about my numbers.

If it's near 7.5:1, I might be crazy enough to try it on the street.

If you were to use 2.2 pistons on stock 225 or 170 rods, you could gain back your compression by milling off about 0.110 from the block and 0.110 from the head (I don't remember exact comp height difference, but this is very close). These are both doable numbers and not difficult to have done. You can also, then, chose your compression ratio at will.

Now I thought you WANTED lower compression pistons if you ran a turbo.

Am I wrong here? What's the optimal CR for turbo-ing a 225?

Lower compression with a turbo will minimize your chance of detonation but will kill your low end acceleration. I would go with stock compression and control detonation with octane and ignition timing.
