I have a working 998 tranny from behind a 318. It was rebuilt less than 2K miles ago. It is the lock up type of course. Can I take all the guts out of it and put them into a 904 from a 75 Dart to make a slant proof tranny?

Can I use the input shaft from the older tranny so I can get a higher stall convertor more affordably? I assume I would need to use the older style front pump and valve body as well if I did not use the lock up TC?

Thoughts?

i assume you can from my reading as the later is a OD trans where the 904 isnt. you need to have that notch on the back of the trans for the OD gear. if you manage to make it fit, then i will be right behind you! add a shift kit to that with a OD trans in the 904. i would be a happy camper!

from what i have been reading though you cant get any tougher stock then a 904. as i read on forabiodies.com the latter a500/a998 were just not as strong stock.

The a-998, and a-999 are not overdrive transmissions. The a-500, and a-508 are. The designation A-998, is heavier duty versions of the A-904, with more clutches, and a heavier band. The A-999 is "beefed" even more, for use with the 360 engine. I am not sure what needs to be done, to convert a lockup to non lockup, or vice/versa.

I guess in the worst case I would just put all the insides of the 998 into the 904 case. I was just hoping to get the bigger clutch pack with the 27 spline input shaft.

You can use the drums to get more clutches, but not the input. The input on a lockup is different than a non lockup and will not work. The lockup will also not work in a 904 case because some of the oil passages are not there.

The 2.74 low gear set from the lock up 904 will go in.
Using your front pump and input shaft will allow the 5 clutch front drum to work, but will need machining on the pump and the front drum for everything to fit.

The slant six was available with the lockup converter just like the 318 powered stuff was right?? What year would I need to get the lockup tranny stuff from? 78-81? or so??
I want to put the lockup trans in my '73 duster or would it even be worth doing??

Can you go with a lock up converter on a 904?
and achieve better mileage?

IIRC, the lock-up started in '78.

Ted, the lock-up will work on a Slant, but you have to have the whole transmission. You can't just stick a lock-up converter in a regular trans.

So pretty much I need to get a slant tranny and converter from a 78 to 80ish car??

they put /6s in cars til 83, and trucks and vans til 87 so that gives you a little wider year-range to pick from, than you think. And yes, the lockup started in 78 but being 1st-year, not all 78s had L/U.
