My dad just sent me a MSD6A. Is this worth the install time? Do I need an eletronic alt and a new coil (the gift that keeps on giving???)? What gains can I expect?

Thanks for the help!

The MSD6A is a good ignition system (though their reliability record hasn't been as good as one would hope for the money). What're you running now? Points? Chrysler electronic?

Well, you'd need an electronic distributor to run the MSD6A (or any other electronic system — Mopar EI, HEI, etc.) so if you're up for getting away from the points, and an MSD6A has landed in your lap, you're that much ahead!

You can get a brand new electronic distributor from Old Car Parts Northwest.

Actually, you can use the white wire on the MSD box to trigger from the points distributor. The MSD will give you better sparks and the points will last longer, but you still have to set the point gap once in a while and reset the timing which you would not have to do with an electronic distributor.

H'mm. I had thought the MSD 5 was suitable for points triggering, but not the MSD 6.

I run my old v-dub with points on an MSD6a. Cured my weak spark problems when I'm on boost.
