I'm out of town on business and my son called me and said when going over bumps or small holes there is a clunking sound on the passenger side. 1974 Plymouth Duster replaced all ball joints and bushings last year. Does anyone have any ideas I call let me son check out while I'm gone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A loose shock or bad shock bushings is the easiest to check...........

Check the nut holding the lower control arm. It should be torqued to 130 foot pounds. In addition to both upper & lower shock bolts, check the strut rod, and the bolts holding the brake caliper. To be safe check both sides of the car.

Give the lug nuts a complementary check also.

Have him check the idler arm also.

My son's '74 Dart Sport did that a couple of weeks ago - the strut rod nut was loose.

Mine is still making noise also.
We switched out the front rims and discovered that the rims were not seating up against the drums properly. Making for a g*d awful clunk clatter noise. Now the rear is doing it. Yay.
I'm still wondering if there isn't something else adding to the noise besides the rims rubbing on the drum though....

Mine clunks when turning. All the suspension/steering parts are new, except for the pitman arm. Im thinking thats what it is, scince its a little loose.

youd better pull those rims off and check for wear on the lug nut holes, if they are ovalled now and they probably are, it will be nearly impossible to keep your lugnuts tight. are these stock rims or aftermarket? steel or alloys?

I have a similar problem. Turns out my right leaf spring is seperating or something so it creaks and clunks under stress. Even though its in the rear of the car it sounds like its coming from the front, might as well double check it by pushing the tail of the car side-to-side and listening to the quarter panel area.

Yes, the rears need to be done this weekend. Getting my tires remounted onto steelies. they are on aluminum now. Lug holes are fine. Definately them not seatind up the right way. YAY for OLD CARS!!!
