I am working on putting on the Hei and coil relay (Thanks Dan!)
and I wanted to check the voltage first. With the key on , the votage to battery is 12.59V and alternator was 12.36V . With the engine running the battery shows 14.05V and the alternator shows 14.36V.

Thanks
Dave

Voltage at the battery with engine off looks good.
Voltage at the alternator with the engine on looks good.

Does the ammeter on your dashboard work? If not — and I'm guessing probably not; they're a weak design — run a 10ga wire from your alternator B+ (output) terminal to the battery positive terminal to reduce the voltage drop between the alternator and the battery.

Yes the ammeter does work, it has a little movement, but barely.
If I do run the 10ga wire from battery to B+ alternator , do I disconnect the wire that is on the alternator B+ terminal now.

Nope, don't disconnect any existing wires — just add the additional new one.

Don't forget to add a fusable link on the end of the extra wire, right at the end to where you connect it. I connect mine to the stud on the starter relay.

Your talking about the wire I am connecting to the relay from a power source . I think it should be a 15a fuse if I remember what I read. Should I put one on, If I run a wire from the battery to the alternator as Dan suggested also.

Thanks

Dave

sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i thought any voltage under 12.9 in a battery was bad. Is it different in modern cars?

A fully-charged "12-volt" battery will read 12.6 to 12.8 volts once the surface charge is knocked off (if the car's been running or the battery's been on a charger, the surface charge can be taken off by putting on the high beam headlights for 90 seconds or so with the engine off and/or charger disconnected).
