i have a 1976 dodge aspen SE and i want to put headers on but the EGR valve is the thing that is interfering with just about everything. my question was that if there was a way i can somehow relocate the EGR or if a company sells smog legal headers, all i want to do is add headers and still pass smog. any help would be great. thanks.

i had a old set of hookers that had a plate and small tube that joined one header tube #4 i think and the bottom of the intake together so the egr can be used. i never used it i just cut it off, i had a offy 4bbl to replace the 1bbl stock intake.

Get Dutra Duals instead, and your EGR (and automatic choke, and thermostatic air cleaner) will remain functional.

From Dutra himself! His name on here is Doc. Send him a PM and he'll get with you on the particulars.

Why wouldn't an EGR work with headers?

I know the Hookers I have do have the plate and tube.

EGR on the slant-6 is dependent on the intake manifold bolting directly to the exhaust at the central "hot box" area. I'm not sure what plate and tube you have in mind, but it's probably not for EGR. Maybe it's for the thermostatic air cleaner, which is not the same thing.

Dan,

The plate and tube supplies exhaust gasses to the intake manifold hot spot.

Oh, interesting...the plate bolts up to the underside of the intake, and the tube runs from there down to one of the primary pipes? H'mmm. I'd worry about the weird pressure reversions that could result from this. The whole point of headers is to amplify the negative pressure pulses to yank the exhaust out of the cylinders, so if you've got a tube running from one of the primary pipes up to the intake, that seems like it'd equally well yank fuel/air mixture out of the intake and into the exhaust tract. Maybe the orifice in the EGR valve is small enough to limit or prevent this effect...?

No, the EGR valve just opens and closes according to vacuum application to the actuator. It is not a check (one-way) valve. When it's open, gas will flow from the side under higher pressure to the side under lower pressure.

yes i do. the smog exempt law stopped at cars that were 75, so 76 and newer still have to do smog.
