ok, so here we are. Through about 25% of 2009. We've sold 5 kits of the pt112h45's and non of the pt112h25's. If I extrapolate that for the rest of the year-we'll hit 20 kits...which I'm kinda a little doubtful we'll do in this economic climate.

We did a set of 3.504 bore size (+.104") pistons for Rob and I'm gauging interest on doing a .100 over on the shelf. Can those of you that have business interests give me some input here? They would be locked into the same 1.625 height as the pt112's.

Let me know what you think! Thanks, Brian Nutter

Brian,

I have been waiting to order a set, and would welcome this as an off-the-shelf item.

The 3.504" pistons and rings just might get me to pull the trigger and order the whole package.

That would change my plans with my 209 "low block" engine, that currently sitting in pieces... with a bunch of broken 3.500 Vega cast pistons. The big problem for me is that the small end of the con rods are at the GM .927 size.

Doug,

No worries, just have the rods bushed. The Weisco pistons are set up for floating pins right?

Hi Brian,

I would be in for a 3.500" set or a 3.504" set. You might consider doing 3.485" instead for the shy folks on bore wall thickness, and big enough for the big boyz.

I have a 3.504" bore motor on the stand using Chev 2.8L V6 pistons and 198 rods. Almost got it together.

I assume the rings would be the same high quality as the current sets, and that they would be easy to get later? Maybe 3.504" is easiest to get good rings for??

Thanks,

Lou

Lou,

In our emails back and forth Brian said that the rings would be the same high quality type as the current package deal.

Gary wanted to go .100 over on this engine, so when I contacted Brian I just went with Doug's suggestion in the other K1/Wiseco thread where he listed the most common metric equivalents.

I'm sure Gary wouldn't quibble over a .004 difference. He just wanted to make sure corresponding rings were readily available or included with the kit.

If the 3.504(89mm) is the more common size and may potentially give Wiseco another option for other markets like the Chevy V6, then that would be a win/win for everyone. Conversely, if the 3.500 would be a limited run that would require special rings and only appeal to us...

I'm already set with what Brian has going with the 3.504 set of custom pistons for me, but if it makes more sense to change that to 3.500 I'm good with that.

Your comment about stepping down a size for the more conservative builders makes sense (given the same considerations above).

I am with the conservative group I already asked about an.080 over and havent jumped on it due to the cost of the custom piston the off the shelf price is a little better.

ok. this is good. keep the input coming. Yes the .5mm increments are important, I can't tell you enough about the quality of the XXrings versus the iron rings available currently. The RA surface finish is about 3-4 versus the 20 ra commonly seen on iron rings. They are very round and very flat...just superior sealing all the way around. Doing .100 over with the same set of rings is possible, but oil ring tension goes well higher than necessary. .002" per side isn't going to make a difference on cylinder wall strength, so we'll go .104 over. We'll also come out with a .084 over likely based on the input of a few of you above.

These XX rings will always be available. We sell these rings to many of the other piston companies and Total Seal.-they are the standard we all use for sport compact.

One other bonus is we've had a new forging become available that has a better fit to this bore size. The pistons we're doing for Rob are 45g lighter with the same crown thickness even at .100 over than our +045's. We will switch the forging over for all the sizes and we'll loose loose 55-65g on the .025's and .045's.

Thanks all for your help. I'll let this thread go for another week to get more input before I pull the trigger. From there, we can expect new parts on the shelf in about 6 weeks.

Rob, I'll discount your customs to stocking piston priced so you're not out in the cold on this one and I appreciate your efforts to promote us. Right now, every set we send out keeps our guys running the machines here in Ohio.

Brian,

That all sounds great, lighter weight too. 3.484" and 3.504" would both (or either) be very nice sizes. I should have the cash for a set in ~2 mo.

Man, these ring packs do look nice. 1.00 mm top ring is really thin, and you're saying everything seals better than stock. That'll be very cool.

BTW, do you have a cc measurement on the valve reliefs? A couple of people have asked me about this, and my eyeballs tell me about 6-9 cc's. Some of them were planning around 3 cc's, and I said no way, they're more than that.

Best,

Lou

I am in the same boat, with a 3 month out time frame. Whichever size you go with, I'm down for pistons & rods.

I too am very interested in forged pistons. The K1 rods will have to come first however,in about three months. Wallet needs to fatten up a bit first!
