I took an awe and could actually feel it is down in the head. It doesn't appear to be just a transfer from the gasket? :?: :?:

Thanks,
Rick

Rick, I'll go check mine tomorrow and see if its got the same # stamped deal as yours.
I'm almost sure mine has been milled tho, compared to 68 head there is a definite difference of at least 1/16+ in. of the bore going up in the head.

I would guess someone stamped it. I have a set of stamps and put all kinds of things in my blocks/heads.

I know the machine shops around here stamp parts that they work with so they can ID it later if problems arise, or some question about the part occurs... One of my heads is stamped with the initials of the machinist and the amount cut off the head (in this case 080)...

Got pics?

These don't appear to be like the stamps you hit with a hammer. I have those at work also. This is a very fine almost "etching" Once I get it back and check it with a mic I'll know if it was every planed before.

So these heads are smaller chambered than the drool plugs? I have a hydraulic one out in the shed (I think!)

Or is a "squishy cam" head a different animal all together?

BTW I am porting a 77 or78 head and I can't help thinking that the exhaust side of the bowls will have some flow problems.

The small blocks have little humps in the port near the flange.

Those do not appear to be factory stampings. Most likely they were done by the machinist. :?

Ok,

We got the head back and measured as Charlie mentioned and I got 3.510 from the face to Valve cover rail. It has been cut .100 already. The finely etched numbers had to be done after planing. The mystery is over. :D

Well as I said the head has been cut .100 I re-checked the cylinder head today before installing it and I cc the top of the block to check the CC's of the eyebrows that are ground at the top of the cylinders. I was pleased to see that with taking the eyebrows into account and the new valve job which did remove some material around the side of the intake valve, the final CR came in at 10.78 instead of 11.2. That will definitely help :D :D
