my 1976 225 has a heat control valve that does not seem to be working. when it fails (no spring tension) does it fail closed or open? it has a weighted disk sticking out from the manifold.

It fails in the open position somewhat most of the time. Make sure that it is moving freely. They can rust and stick.

I found a picture of mine... I think counter-clockwise, looking at the counter weight from the front of the car, blocks the heat to the intake and would be the most free running for the exhaust.

Is this also the case with earlier (63) riser valves? Mine is clearly not working, and I need to be sure that pushing it counter clockwise ensures that the exhaust is as free flowing as possible.

Mine is also not working, and no one (the Dodge dealer, Napa auto parts, etc.) can seem to locate a rebuild kit, and all the slant sixes are gone from the pick your parts around me. I have a 67 with the square weight (as opposed to the later years ound weight). If I am standing at the bumper in front of the car and looking toward the windshield and at the engine, it will be in what position if i turn it clockwise? so the top of the square moves toward the driver side? I know it only turns about 1/4th of a circle, but I want to make sure that in my situation in southern california, it is not sending hot exhaust to the intake.

Try putting "PB Blaster" on the shaft where it enters the manifold, let it set for a while, then tap gently with a small hammer one end then the other. This may let the shaft move much more freely.

thank Richard. I got it to move, but now I need a new spring. Until I can find one, without taking the intake off, I cant tell which way keep the exhaust going down and not up to the intake. I even looked in the service manual, and there is no diagram to show which way is closed and which way is open. Do you know?

Rotate the shaft (looking at it from the front of the car) counterclockwise.

Thanks guys. And the flap inside didnt change when they changed the weight from square to round? Because my mechanic though it was the other way around (with the weight clockwise) - any ohotos by any chance? I tried to find a slant six at the pick a part, but no luck and I really dont want to have to take anything apart.

Please trust us ! Don't make me have to do a video of both types of counter weights just because your mechanic thinks otherwise.

Sorry! I just wanted to make sure, because he rotated it clockwise and wired the valve to the post, he said it was the reason the engine was running hot. But that would mean that he wired it OPEN to heat the Intake, right? Not closed... The other way (counterclockwise) would prevent it from heating the intake... If I could have found a rebuild kit, or even the newer style of valve, I would just rebuild/replace it, but no one has them any more.
