Post subject: is my engine dead
PostPosted: Wed May 14, 2003 7:13 am
i have a 69 valiant. It 's a 170,it was running great.Good compression, great gas mileage. Then going down a hill i felt like i was losing power, the oil light came on.I pulled over the car was still running but making a bad bumping, knocking sound from down low.I had it towed.Oil was fine.It still starts,i pulled the valve cover, with it running i didn't see a lot of oil .

did i spin a bearing?
Should i pull the engine?
is there anything i should check while the engine is still in the car and running?
thanks for any help

Oil lights and loud noises when oil level is normal usually indicate a dead engine.

My guess is a spun bearing which usually announces itself with a groaning, scraping sound.

It sure sounds like a spun bearing.
Look around for a replacement engine, that way you can "switch" and keep the car together rather them having it sit around with the engine out.
