When porting a head, are the side walls important to port as well? I've done the roof of the ports and blended the bowls. Should I just call it good or keep on grinding??

I would just smooth the sidewalls, and not remove much material at all. The bowls is where almost all of the gain is. I knock the guide bosses down quite a bit too.

At some point you should measure the approx cc's that each port is displacing: Not real important unless you are taking out a lot of metal.

Almost all the horses in any head are hiding in the valve pocket or bowl. The rest is almost for apearance sake. not quite but by comparson to the rest it often seems so. You can make a quick testor with a vaccum cleaner and sonmeABS pipe and a u tube made from a ruler and clear plastic tubing. It wont read CFM but it will tell you when the port flows better and Vaccum will fall on the home made guage as flow increases (assuming the source of the vaccum remains constant. ) It will also tell you your ports ideal cam lift.
Some people will be able to catch on right quick how to use this crude but effective device and others will not understand it or want to critique it.. If you can see how it would help use it. If not dont worry about it.
