So, I bought an '85 Ram a while back and found out that the valves were stuck. I pulled the motor and bought a running 170 out of an early Valiant, thinking it might be cheaper than rebuilding the 225, because I think it has more problems than not.
I have been running into small things because the 225 was made for a truck, and the 170 obviously wasn't. So today, I went to put the 225 oil pick up on(because the pan is different), and found that it wouldn't fit. Any thoughts? Did I maybe bend the pick up? Has anyone ever tried this? Should I just give up on the 170 and go back to the 225 and hope that it doesn't need to be rebuilt?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

What year is the 170? There should not be a problem swaping the oil pan and pick up, BUT:
You mentioned early 170. If the engine is 1967 or earlier, you will be unable to use the auto trans from the 85 truck, with out buying a special torque converter. If the truck is a standard shift, you will need a early (1967 down) flywheel.
Check the hub and counter-bore size on the rear of the crankshaft before doing anything more.

Swapping the 170 will work if these issues are addressed, but it'll be way down on torque compared to a 225. Swapping the head and using the hydro valvetrain is one option,

Well, actually the 170 is a '62.. and the truck is a manual(so was the '62). Yeah, I realize that I will be losing some torque... hopefully not too much. I have the flywheel out of the '62 as well...

Any other thoughts?

Thanks guys!

Be forewarned, the 170 does fine in a car, but a heavy vehicle is a bit much for it. I had an extended box 70's Dodge Tradesman van that the PO swapped in a 170. I tuned that engine to where it ran like new, but it had such a hard time pushing that big van around. I had the gas pedal to the floor most of the time I was driving it, not an exaggeration here, it was wide open most of the time just to keep up with traffic. This got old after a couple of years and I swapped a 225 back in. The power gain was such a relief!

well... It sounds like maybe the 225 is the way to go... Maybe this project will have to be on hold for a bit...

Thanks for the input guys! I didn't realize that it would make that much of a difference!

Living in Kansas might make that 170 a better pick than around here.

If you want to do 70 into a headwind on the Interstate you will want the 225.
