Howdy, I was just wondering what everybody's favorite brand of oil filter is? The Runnings in a nearby town stopped carrying Purolators and switched to Fram and I DO NOT want to use Fram, so it peaked my curiousity of other brands.

Wix on my domestic stuff. Factory filters on my Acura.

Wix, Hastings, Purolator, or even (shock!) Motorcraft are on my "yes" list.

Fram, K&N, Amsoil, and all the off-brand filters are on my "NO!" list.

Special filters worth knowing about are the Wix #1806 (which has a built-in standpipe so oil won't drain down the middle even if your oil pump hasn't got a standpipe on it) and Wix #1773 (which is an extra-tall filter for greater dirt capacity and less flow restriction).

I knew Napa Gold was a rebrand, I just couldn't remember which one. I generally use a Napa Gold 1806 (with the standpipe), but, after reading Dan's comment above, I might try running a 1773.

I use the 1773s when I'm trying to clean up an engine that is especially sludged, or if I'm using costly synthetic oil and long drain intervals.

I've started using Fleetguard filters but I haven't seen very many evaluations of this brand other than on BITOG. I don't know if Fleetguard is better or worse than Wix or the other better filters. They tell me that they are the OEM filter supplier for several hundred companies and have a non-prorated warranty. Cummins calls their synthetic media filters StrataPore. See BITOG: Fleetguard Stratapore LF16002 for a dissection.

The equivalent filter to the one Dan recommends (Wix 51806 / Napa Gold 1806) is Fleetguard LF701.

The Wix 51515 cross-references to Fleetguard LF551A, LF3313, and LF3487 (synthetic media)

The Wix 51773 cross-references to Fleetguard LF697 and LF787

Once again, Thanks Dan! I have known about BITOG for several years but never thought much about filters (other than Fram sucks)! I have only run synthetic oils since 1981 and looks like now I will only use Wix/Napa.
