I have a question, can the coil bracket/module be bolted in the stock location for the coil? or would it get to hot? I want to keep it on the engine so the high voltage will have a solid path back to the coil.

Why clutter your area to work around the changing of sparkplugs. The ground strap or if you have the ground lead from the battery attached to the block would be quite good.

On my brother's 83 Dodge van, I installed an e-core coil off of a fuel injected 89 Ford 351 motor. I was able to use the bracket that came with the coil to mount it onto the two factory coil mounting bolt holes on the slant six alternator bracket. I enlarged one of the e-core bracket holes to make it fit, but it fit very well. However, this was on a van. In an a-body you might have clearance issues with the passenger fenderwell. Also, Ford used numerous different e-core coil brackets depending on the application. I am fairly certain that all Ford truck/van fuel injected motors use the right coil bracket. I do know that the mustang bracket is different.

At this point, my brother's van is still running Mopar electronic ignition. HEI will be added in the future, but it isn't on there yet.

OK, I guess that a coil,is a coil, is a coil so long as its a E-core coil...........right?

HEI works with standard coils, but I use an E-core GM coil myself.

Within the next month or so, I will be pulling the head on my brother's to replace it with a rebuilt one. I'll try and remember to snap some pictures of the coil mounting setup at that time.

My point was just that it is possible to mount an e-core coil to the factory slant six spot using the Ford truck/van coil and bracket.

I am starting this conversion and need a bit of help with the coil wiring. I have the 3-pin gm coil. (Picture from Dan's write-up. Thanks for revamping that, btw.)
Everyone else seems to be using the 4 pin version. The coil has no markings as to what's what, so I have no idea which pin is A and which is C. (I figured out B on my own. :) ) Thanks in advance.

As you have positioned in picture left is A and right is C.
You will be better off using the older 4 pin module, you will have to trim off the fin closest to back side of the module to get it to fit. Side note the connector for the coil is not generally at parts stores (hope you got it with the rest of this unit) if not PM me for the part #

Take a look at the updates in the original thread HEI Electronic Ignition Retrofit How-To. You'll find that and others (including this thread) in the engine FAQ under Electrical FAQ-More Ignition information.
Ceej (and probably others too) has done a great job updating the FAQ. :bow: :D

I have also a question about the coil. I'm collecting items for the conversion, and already found a electronic distributor and a HEI unit, but i don't know which coil i need.

If I search for the FD-478, I only find coils with 3 pins like the one in the how-to, but in the HEI wiring diagram there are 4 pins. Can anybody tell me which coil I should use?

Either coil will work, kind of what do you have. The 4 pin coil conecters are available at auto parts stores as "coil pig tails" and are a 2 part unit, 1 light and other dark.
