So I've dropped the tank on my '63 wagon, and am preparing to have it vatted/boiled/lined. Removed the sending unit, and the sock is toast. Given I'd like to do this as cost-effectively as possible, I'm going to clean the sending unit with carb cleaner to remove all the crud. Is the sock a replacement part they sell alone, or do I need to buy a whole new sending unit? I can't quite tell how the sock comes off - is it screwed on or just press-fit onto the fuel pickup line?

The first time I bought a new sock from a Paddock (now gone), and the next time, while the Chrysler dealer couldn't sell me one, a Ford dealer could. Most are 5/16", a very standard size, and it just slides onto the tube. I've never been able to remove one w/o breaking it to pieces in the process - they get very brittle with age.

Thanks. Anyone have a current source for replacement socks? I'm about to Google search them. My aftermarket parts places here in LA (Pep Boys, Autozone, etc) don't have cylindrical strainer socks like these are supposed to have. And a couple dealerships have told me they only sell the entire unit.

Send a pm to slantsixdan or Josh Skinner. I can't remember which one of them has the part number. I believe you get it at the Ford dealership. I had to buy a sending unit gasket, fuel pipe grommet and a sending unit sock. I used their part numbers and ended up going to the Dodge, Chevy and Ford dealerships to get everything.

Here are the numbers for a '65: float, strainer sock, gasket

BTW, it is listed as a 'Fuel Tank Gage Strainer'.

Olaf.
