I went out and bought a decent torque wrench at Pep Boys. Then I warmed up the engine, shut it off, and tightened the head bolts to 75. I did it in two passes, going to 70 first. I was shocked at how far the bolts turned. Then I started it back up and set the valves. There is no doubt it is running smoother now.

I think maybe I killed my O2 sensor by letting it idle in the garage for so long. When I took it for a ride, it was yielding ridiculous AF ratios which I did not believe at all. It showed way rich. I will post about this in the fuel injection section.

Thanks all.

Sam

Drove the car to work this morning, and the engine is so smooth now. I imagine the valve adjustment was the big thing, but the exhaust sounded more even after re-torquing the head, even before I readjusted the valves. It feels like a new car. Don't put this service off.

Relevant info, thanks. I had a bolt by cyl. #5 go loose twice.

Olaf.
If I see something like this... I replace the bolt and look carefully for possible cracks.
