That's some weight reduction I want to do to the Duster as well.

I was able to complete the Light weight Steering Conversion.

I really just needed to get an attaching point for the upper Bearing that I bought.


I got a 3/4" diameter steering bearing from Summit.


Here are a few pics of the process:

The bearing fit, but only over the first few inches of the shaft.. where the shaft changes shape it bulges out a few thousandths.. So I needed to grind and sand the shaft to get it to clear.

Final Fit.. A little bit of light AL Angle bar attached to the bearing and the Frame completes the job.

I routinely measure the beams.starting line SAc 1.5, samoa 1 3/4 infinion 2:. Most others in between,the three inch rule ,which no one checks in bracket racing allows some wiggle room. The top end beems are usually 5 inches off the groung.,so no need for an adjustable damn to trip the beams earlier. And its not allowed in any class as far as i know. For consistency its preferable to trip the top end with the same part of the car(tire ,bumper spoiler etc.) under full throttle or on the brakes.. I have lost a lot of rounds by breaking out hard on the brakes becouse the spoiler tripped the beams. THis car had 23 inches to the fromt of the tire.

Yep It weighs 3# to be exact.. Will probably get a Light racing one soon.. Haven't researched them yet.


Here is an update on some things done today:

I bought some Pan Evac Bungs etc.. I also Bought an extra Breather to go in place of the PVC valve.. I will be using the stock breather on the front of the valve cover and I had to Modify The PVC grommet area to accept the parts store Mr gasket that I bought..


While I had the valve cover off I decided to Modify the Baffle that sits over the #5 Rocker arms.. The Adjusters hit it a bit so I raised it to avoid this problem.

she`s looking good and light,just looking at the inner fender were the msd box is mounted, your not going to get vibration there?

Thanks Terry..

as for the MSD box..Possibly.. But the Front Shock Tower is welded right below it.. That's why I left it there..for now at least

I thought of moving it onto the inside of the firewall.. Maybe a project for next winter is to get rid of all the unwanted stock wiring and move / Rewire components as needed.

I put Ruster up on jack stands to Begin Taking the trans out for the converter swap and Found some more of that Thick undercoating..

I got the torch out and began scraping..

I got 5# of undercoating off the car... specifically on the front of the car which is good.

So calculated weight is right at 2200.7#

One More Pound and the car will be sub 2200!

pulled 13 lb aluminum radiator today and cut more out off front inner stuff.New aluminum is 6.5 lbs.also started on pass fender.Thimk weight loss is about 10 lbs today,all up front.Happy,sore and still bleeding a little.Mark

I see you've upgraded your scale technology Greg. Where did you get that nifty new scale? What is the weight range on this new scale? Could you also use it for such light weights as pistons, rods, etc?

I've removed maybe up to 5 pounds of undercoating and other gunk from the Duster, but didn't weigh it. There's still plenty more up under there! :lol:

I got it from Harbor Freight Online..

It's great for small stuff and will measure up to about 10#.. I think it is in .5g increments.

So probably great for this type of weight removal etc, but not quite precise enough for engine blueprinting type stuff (?).
