Here are some shots of the Rear Brake drums before their Diet.

Left - Weighed 11.5#

Right Drum - Weighed about the same - ~11.3# Nither of the drums would weigh in on my 5000g Small scale - FYI 5000g = 11.02#

I took the Drums to the local machine shop to get the "ridges" machined off.
Here's what they looked like when I got them Back:

Here's the weight back from the machine shop:
Right: 10.262#

Left: 9.770#

THen I decided I wanted to get more weight off of these.. I think THe machine shop was afraid to cut into them more than what they did.
I have no lathe yet or a buddy near by with one so I bolted up my axle puller on one bolt hole and welded in on the other side and chucked it up in my drill press..

I used the Angle Grinder alot on the drill press.... and Here's what I got:

That is a total weight loss of 3.964# - Roatating weight too!

These were 2 unmatched brake drums that I had just layin around for ruster when I sapped to the Big Bolt pattern.. They were 2 of the lightest stock drums that I found off of the many 8 1/4 & 7 1/4 FJM rears that I have parted or sold over the years.. They had no Fins or big Bell flares to start with!

The heavier one goes on the Right :-)


@ Lou.. That weight should be with a 1/2 cell of fuel say 2.5 Gal... and sure if you can bring scales I would greatly appreciate it. :bow:

Today I Installed the Lightened Rear Brake Drums:

Polished the aluminum Wheels - They were a bit scuzzy from not having an enclosed trailer and also pulling in alot of rain.



Lost another 1.6#.. Removed the bolts for frame connectors.. I used the bolts to locate them waay back whenI welded them in.. But I got lazy and never took the bolts out.. Also scraped off more undercoat and other junk.

Believe it or not, on the NPS Camaro I helped on at the race car shop we did that...............................................to titanium studs. :shock:

Thanks guys..

I like being sick..cough cough...
My meds dont seem to be working.. Oh well.
Had Valentines dinner tonite and now getting back to more cutting on ruster..

I think I am keeping the wheel studs for now... Some sort of IHRA / NHRA rule about them? The fronts are stocker studs for now. That might change when I get some wilwood dynalites up front in the next year or 2!

I have been eyeing up this spotweld seam for a while!

Here are the Shots of the Seam before the Cutter hit it.. your Typical Stock A Body Cowl Area.. Some of the Spots have 4 layers of metal swandiched in there!

I will do the same thing here as I did on the 4 door frames... Cut all the spot weld / Pinch weld areas out and then weld them back up flush.

Got 1# off the Front today...success.. The Box Tare's @.680 so it's just 1#.

2192.5# - 1.0#=

Well I got the last major bit of winter project(s) complete on ruster today... Welding up the cowl where I had sliced off the spotweld / pinch weld area.

A few Glamour Shots: I finally got to start ruster up and pull it out of the garage.. I think the Green converter will be too tight but I can use it while I send the other one back to midwest to get the stall speed raised up to 5000RPM.
