Greg, the lug nut rule is that they have to extend into the hex of the lug nut the diameter of the stud. I.E, a 1/2" stud has to be at least 1/2" into the hex. They do not have to stick out.

There's at least a couple more OZ's buddy. :D :D

I like the aero stuff a lot. If you're interested, a good reference for down to earth aero concepts is a book called Speed with Economy by Kent Paser. It's written for airplanes but air is air and moving things through it causes drag. One interesting aspect is cooling drag, which you've addressed by closing up the front. But he found that letting the air out was as important as getting it in from a drag standpoint.

His challenges were similar to ours - fixed amount of power, so how to maximize it. Really interesting reading, and this book can be read like a novel.

Looking at the car, you might look into vortex generators (VGs) across the roof ahead of the back window. Undoubtedly there's a lot of airflow separation (aka drag) there and VGs will mitigate some of it. Not all, with that steep of a back glass, but it should help some. They can easily be home made out of thin plastic or aluminum and stuck on with double stick tape.

With timeslips showing results to the .001, testing should easily validate or exclude these things.

Thanks George..

I will look into these references.. I was studying the wheel openings on the Funny Cars Last Night on TV from Phoenix and I have some (alot More) aero Ideas.. I am glad you enjoy watching the progress for ruster.

As far as the Cooling drag goes I do have the Rear tops of the fenders now cut open and the Back of the hood raised ~ 2.5. I also might expierment with closing up the cooling area completley for some testing sessions in march/ april.. Another piece of AL sheet should handle that task easily :-)

Not a Happy St Patty's day fo' me.

Well I got all packed up Drove to maryland - Perfect weather in March - 10* hotter than Los Angeles CA in the middle of March in the Middle of Maryland..

The Air on my weather station was around 31.0 - 31.10" of Hg.. 50-40% humidity..

Even The Guy Known as Turtle was working the Tech Area and Says"Hey I remember you from last year!!... You Runnin 12's today??" (it's awesome to have the track staff remember your slant 6 machine and the times it runs after not seeing it for a year!)


I am ready to kick off Ruster's 2012 Year - Almost 100# lighter than last year and With a different Converter and a Spare carb to try out .. I am pumped to make 50 runs..


So I pull up for the 10th run of the day - Right lane Me - Left Lane Rick Covalt in the first Run with his valiant..

Stage em up - Lights come down an smash goes the Happy pedal -

Every thing feels good until about the Finish line.. I puked a driveshaft at 106MPH..

Upon further inspection I am glad the shaft did not come through the floor (yay steel floors & and Yay for Heavy Driveshfat Loops - ) It did it's job..

The shaft did not cut down any tires.. I was able to safley pull off and get to the side to minimize oil down..

I figured the tranny yoke came out the back of the trans and that's what put a bit of fluid down.. Nope..

The shaft came out with the yoke staying in the trans..

Okay so what is putting fluid down?? Cut tranny line??

No -

The Bellhousing is cracked too and pulled the dipstick tube out of the trans..
Glad I did not slide around on my own Tranny fluid.

Good News -

I posted a best 60' and a Best 1/8 Mile timesiip.

If I get a new trans built and a ney shaft and there is no other damage This should get excitin'

12.37 off the trailer @ 106 With a puking driveshaft is not bad at all! The Aero is helping a bunch! and The Lighter Brake drums and other weight reductions are Helping too!

If I get a new rive shaft soon it will be AL so I will shed a few more pounds.

Time for an aluminum Shaft and some 1350 Style u joints with Some bilet yokes.. Also I need to check the Rear end Pinion Angle - Might Have to Order some Pinion Angle Shims.

See,, That's what you get for thinking about a new driveshaft(look back in your posts) and I was thinking that I should have brought my back up trans back there last summer. What do you think may have failed ??

Any idea that the trans may have split due to the "new" converter??

@ Rick it Was our First run but 10th round run of the day in other words 8 people ran before us..

@ Romeo Yep I got a donor trans this morning - from my dad and I have another one too - I will take that one from you though if you dont want it...
I wanted a new setup for my Drive shaft a while back - Now I need one - Probably going Inland Empire with 1350 u joints and Billet yokes on both ends.


@ Lou Could Be that "new" converter I am not really sure until I get it all apart.

It could have been a u joint or the drive shaft itself too.
We will find out.

This is also the first run I made w/o A pinion snubber - I wanted to experiment with this and That could have been a factor as well??
Although the pinion andgles would seem to be most severe at the launch and shifts my Junk might have just reached the braking point at the traps with this "no Snubber" setup.

Thoughts?

I doubt it's the pinion angle. Most likely failure is a 40 year old drive shaft that was not meant to see this type of continued abuse.
