It sounds like you have all the parts but need to replace the "bushings & insulator" pieces to get the positive action back.
Usually the Insulator, at the carb is the reason for loosness in this linkage system. (14-11-30)

Insulator yes, shaft no. The shaft usually doesn't break or fail, what happened to yours?

Is the shaft the same between 170 and 225? I was wondering if there is a slight length difference due to block height.

Different rod from accelerator pedal to bell crank and from bell crank to carb for 170 vs. 225 engines.
