My dad just picked up a slant six and trans that is bolted to a skid. He says the guy used it to run a sawmill. It has a very odd manual transmission bolted to it. We're not sure if it's a car trans or something different. So I'm asking the collective wisdom here.
The bell housing has multiple bolt patterns.
The starter looks odd.
There appears to be a speedo-cable attachment.
There is a band brake on the end and a really odd driveshaft connection.


Also, the carb has some weird stuff going on. Is there anything special about the engine?

The bellhousing is definately one of the early-60's low mount starter units for the larger flywheel with the 11" clutch...the low mount starter looks like the 3 bolt unit used in the early 60's (these weigh a ton compared to the newer reduction gear starters)

No 3-bolt starters on slant-6s in passenger cars or trucks. The '60-'61 cars used any of four heavy Prestolite (called "Auto-Lite" at the time) MDT direct-drive starters differing only in minor detail, but all of them were 2-bolt. These photos show a Prestolite starter, not the same as the '60-'61 unit, typical of marine and some industrial Slant-6s. Also, the carburetor is for a clamp-band type air cleaner attachment, but the choke is automatic, which is a somewhat but not entirely weird combination.

Looks like an A745 3-speed for a truck which would explain the band parking brake. It also appears the carburetor has a governor underneath it which was common on fleet vehicles of this vintage. You already noticed the bellhousing which fits the slant and the A/LA V8. Nothing too odd, just not as common as the lighter duty passenger car stuff.

Thanks for the info. After a google search I think it is the 3-speed. The bell housing having both patterns will be nice so we can mount an LA engine to it as well.
