A long, long time ago, in the Beforetimes, Doug Dutra wrote an article containing a Ford part number for a replacement float (only) to fix leaky fuel gauge tank sender units. I can't find the P/N. Anyone still got?

Dang, I have that issue! To bad its buried in the black hole known as my storage unit. If it helps any, I believe its the issue featuring the A100 vans and trucks. Doug did an artical on 25 cheap up-grade tips in that issue. Sadly, that artical didn't help me much (B body owner).

It's in the parts database. Use the Parts List link on the main page and search for "float"'

Ford seems to have lost their minds on fuel sender floats. One dealer near me wanted $17 another wanted $19.

I found mine at Auto Krafters, P/N 15309, for $6.95/$11 and change with shipping:

My old one is still rattling around in the tank behind the seat where I dropped it along with a fish net I was trying to retrieve it with. One day I'll get time to remove the tank and dump them both out.

Last time I purchased this item at a F@%$ dealer I also had "sticker shock" but then realized that the price was for a package with 2 floats in it.
I wonder if they still come 2 per box??

I bought the float at the ford dealer a couple years ago. I recall it being about $12 for one. If I'm not mistaken, the sock comes from GM right?

I didn't ask but that may be the problem. I don't think any of them checked but look up the part number on the computer - didn't mention it being a package of 2.

Unless you need 2 the one from Auto Krafters works fine and looks exactly the same. The package even has a Ford logo on it and says "Official Liscensed Product" on it. Made of brass.

My gas gauge ('63 Dart 170) doesn't work. Will I need all of these to fix it?

You'll need to do some diagnosis to find out what's causing the problem. It could be a dead sender, but it could also be the sender's fine and just the float has sunk, or it could be a missing ground at the sender, or it could be a dead fuel gauge itself, or it could be a wiring problem.

Get the three books described in this thread as quickly as you can; they are the very first tools to buy when learning how to fix your car.

Seriously, thank you, Dan. This is the info I've been needing. When I was in school, they didn't allow girls to take shop (believe me, I tried), so I've got a lot of catch up to do.

Sure thing, glad to help.

There was a girl in my 9th-grade English class who is probably still better than I am at rebuilding engines. And I'm a better cook than some women I know. The best revenge against small-minded bigots who issue rules like "Girls can't take shop" is to do exactly what you're doing: learn it anyhow.
