Tried some lucas but didnt help. The new motor l believe has taken a toll on the old girl ?[/b]

Not surprising.

Here is a useful diagnostic aid:

This tells you what components are in use during each gear. You can use this to test which gears have difficulty and almost pinpoint what components of the transmission are faulty.

Second gear uses the rear clutch and the front band. First and third gear also use the rear clutch. If first and third are OK, then I would suspect the front band.
