any thoughts on lifters? im about to put my cam in and was wondering if there is any real difference in brands.

another question is why cant i reuse the lifters that are in there? ive torn down motors with a quarter million miles on them and the lifters look like there is nothing wrong with them aside from a slight indent. naturally with a motor with no where near that the indent would be much less. if that were the case why couldnt i reuse them?

That Indent is the wear, and its a "paired" part with the lobe that it was riding on. You will quickly and definitely wipe a new cam with old lifters. Its kind of like swapping wives/girlfriends, yeah they are both female, but with different 'patterns'. As far as your first question, not knowing what brand of cam was chosen, I would surmise any QUALITY lifter (NEW) will work.

I AM assuming also that we are talking a NEW cam? If not thats a whole other bag of worms as the original lifters NEEDS to go back to the same place they were removed from, otherwise it will also get 'wiped'....

its a new comp cam. so any new lifters will work? im just asking because there are huge price differences and id like to save a couple bucks because i dont know how long im gonna run this cam.

You can use any brand of new lifter. You can also see if there is a local cam grinding place, they might have a regrinding service for lifters to reface them for less $$$.

I am not for sure how tight the budget is, and why the decision was to buy cam only but Here they are
$6.24 ea. - ($74.88/set) plus shipping. I didnt go to great lengths searching and there may be cheaper places....

got a deal on the cam and the budget is tight enough that im gonna be running the stock springs for a while till i get the funds to upgrade. i have enough to pick up the lifters at cost but was wondering if i could do something to save a couple bucks to get the springs too.

im trying to find someplace local to regrind the stock lifters but so far have had no success. does anyone know of a shop that does it in south jersey?

Save up your money and get the proper springs. You wil be much happier in the long run.

What number cam did you get?

There's no such thing as too much cam....only not enough engine!

The Egge Machine Company in Santa Fe Springs, CA, can regrind the old ones, or sell new ones for $5.46.

I also think some members have had Oregon Cam Grinding, Inc. in Vancouver, Washington, near Portland, Oregon, regrind lifters for app. $2 a piece, maybe the price is higher if you don't buy a cam at the same time.

i do plan on getting the right springs but for now with break in and lack of funds i didnt think the original ones would hurt for now. i got the 264s.

You shouldn't need a set of 340 dual springs on that cam, it would fair better with a set of 318 springs. That being said, you will need to check your springs for uniformity...I had my machinist check a set of springs from a stock motor with high miles and the springs on the head after 50K miles on a rebuild using stock slant springs with a comp 252 and at least 3 springs in each set had 10 lbs of seat pressure the rest were with in a few lbs of each other...
